Understanding Demand Flexibility Services: What They Mean for Somerset Solar Users

As more homes and businesses across the UK – especially here in Somerset – embrace renewable energy, understanding how to make the most of it becomes essential. One of the newer ways energy users can engage with the grid and benefit financially is through Demand Flexibility Services (DFS).

At Sunlit Solar, we’re proud to lead the way in Somerset solar installations, helping customers harness clean energy and explore smart energy solutions like DFS. So, what exactly are Demand Flexibility Services – and how can they work for you?

What Are Demand Flexibility Services?

Demand Flexibility Services are schemes run by the National Grid to help balance energy supply and demand during peak times. By reducing electricity use during these high-demand periods (typically winter evenings), homes and businesses can support grid stability – and get paid for doing so.

You can think of it as a way to “turn down” your usage for a short time when the grid is under pressure, in return for a financial reward.

The picture at the top of this post shows a screenshot from a battery that Sunlit Solar installed where the owner made £381.27 up until the end of February, by signing up to the DFS.

How DFS Works

  1. Sign Up: You register with a participating energy supplier or third-party aggregator.
  2. Get Notified: You’ll be alerted when a DFS event is coming – often just a day ahead.
  3. Reduce Usage: During the event window (usually 30–60 minutes), you cut your electricity use by shifting activities like laundry, cooking, or charging devices.
  4. Get Rewarded: If you successfully reduce your usage, you earn credits or payments on your energy bill.

Benefits of DFS for Somerset Solar Customers

Earn While You Save
If your home already uses solar panels or battery storage, you’re in a great position to reduce grid demand while still powering your home – meaning you can benefit financially without disrupting your routine.

Support a Greener Grid
By easing pressure on the grid, you help reduce the need for fossil fuel-based backup power stations – supporting the wider transition to renewables.

Better Energy Awareness
Many users find that participating in DFS helps them become more aware of their energy habits, encouraging smarter, more efficient use overall.

Great for Battery Owners
Have a Powerwall or other battery system? You can draw from stored solar energy during DFS events instead of using grid power – a smart way to contribute without compromising on comfort.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

While DFS offers exciting opportunities, there are a few things to consider:

⚠️ Limited Events: DFS is typically only activated during winter and only when needed, so it’s not a constant source of income. Think of it more as a ‘boost’ to your bank account during the dreary winter months.

⚠️ Mild Disruption: You may need to adjust when you use energy-hungry appliances, which could be inconvenient for some households.

⚠️ Tech Requirements: Participation may require a smart meter and access to a compatible supplier or platform.
