Client Overview:
Durstons is a family-owned Somerset business with a history spanning more than 150 years. Specialising in high-performance compost and growing media, the company has built a strong reputation for quality, experience and innovation within its sector.
With a substantial amount of available roof space across the site, Durstons wanted to explore how solar could help reduce ongoing energy costs while supporting the company’s wider sustainability goals.

Project Scope:
Sunlit Solar was appointed to design and install a large-scale 220.8kW solar PV system, tailored to the energy needs of the business and the layout of the property.
The aim was to make effective use of the available roof space, increase on-site renewable energy generation and help the company reduce its reliance on grid electricity.

Solution Implemented:
Our team designed and installed a bespoke commercial solar PV array for Durstons, carefully planned around the site and its available roof areas.
The system includes 480 PV modules, supported by nine 20kW inverters and 240 optimisers. This design helps the business capture as much usable solar energy as possible, while supporting strong long-term performance across the installation.

Results Achieved:

Clean Energy Generation:
The completed solar PV system is predicted to generate approximately 220.32MWh of clean energy each year.
By producing more of its own electricity on site, Durstons is expected to reduce its dependence on traditional grid energy, helping to lower running costs and improve long-term operational efficiency.

Carbon Emissions Reduction:
The system is also predicted to save around 42.61 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, which is equivalent to planting approximately 1,957 trees each year.

Operational Efficiency:
With an estimated monthly bill saving of £5,482, an estimated net lifetime bill saving of £1,252,135 and a predicted payback period of less than four years, the installation shows the long-term value a well-designed commercial solar system can offer.
If your business has suitable roof space, solar could help reduce energy costs, improve sustainability and provide long-term protection against rising electricity prices.
