How to Choose the Right Solar Panel Mounting System

At Sunlit Solar, we know that every solar installation is unique. One of the key decisions you’ll make when going solar is how your panels will be mounted. The right mounting system depends on your roof type, available space, aesthetic preferences and energy goals. To help you understand your options, we’ve put together a guide to the different types of solar panel mounting systems we install.

Pitched Roofs

On-Roof Solar Panel Mounting

On-roof mounting is the most common type of installation. Panels are secured above your existing roof covering, allowing excellent airflow underneath for optimal performance. During installation, metal hooks are attached to the rafters, rails are added across these hooks, and the panels are then clamped in place. A weatherproof seal ensures long-term protection.

On-roof systems are flexible enough to suit most roof types, including slate and tile. One consideration with on-roof systems is that the gap beneath the panels can sometimes attract birds looking for a nesting spot. While this doesn’t damage the panels, it can become a nuisance and may create unwanted noise. To prevent this, Sunlit Solar now installs bird mesh protection as standard with all on-roof systems, ensuring your installation remains clean, quiet, and hassle-free.

In-roof Solar Panel Mounting

In-roof, or integrated, systems are perfect for new builds or homes undergoing a re-roof. Here, solar panels sit flush within special trays, replacing part of the roof itself for a sleek, streamlined look. Because the panels are integrated, birds cannot nest beneath them, reducing maintenance.

In-roof systems are ideal for homeowners who prioritise aesthetics and want their panels to blend seamlessly with the property.

Pitched Metal Trapezoidal Roof Mounting

For buildings with pitched metal trapezoidal roofs, solar panels can be mounted directly onto the raised seams using specialist brackets. This lightweight and cost-effective system makes full use of large roof areas while minimising wind uplift. It’s ideal for warehouses, factories, agricultural buildings and barn conversions.

Flat Roofs

South-Facing Flat Roof Mounting

For properties with a flat roof, a south-facing flat roof mounting system is a great option. Panels are installed on frames that tilt them at the best angle to capture maximum sunlight, ensuring higher efficiency and improved performance. The tilt also helps keep the panels free from rainwater and dirt build-up, making them easier to maintain and ensuring consistent energy output. This type of installation works especially well for commercial buildings or homes with large, unobstructed flat roof spaces, providing a neat and effective way to make use of available roof area.

East–West Flat Roof Mounting

East-west array on a flat roof

For flat roofs, east–west mounting maximises roof space by arranging panels in back-to-back rows, one facing east and one west. This provides a smoother energy output throughout the day, as panels capture morning and afternoon sunlight.

This layout is particularly suited to commercial buildings or homes with large flat roof areas, offering a balanced approach to energy generation while using the available space efficiently.

Flat Trapezoidal Roof Mounting

Flat trapezoidal roofs are common on industrial and commercial buildings. Panels are fixed directly to the ridges of the metal sheets with robust brackets. This allows for quick installation, excellent durability and high energy output on large roof spaces, making it a popular choice for commercial projects.

Carport and Canopy Mounting

Carport and canopy systems generate solar power while providing covered parking or shaded areas. Panels are mounted on strong steel, wood or aluminium frames, protecting vehicles or communal spaces beneath.

A major advantage is that these systems can include an EV charger, allowing you to charge your electric vehicle directly from the solar energy produced. This makes carport and canopy systems a practical solution for homes and businesses wanting to combine renewable energy with functional outdoor space.

Ground-Mounted Systems

Ground-mounted solar panels offer flexibility for properties with available land. Panels are installed on sturdy metal frames, which can be angled for maximum sun exposure and easily scaled to meet energy needs. This type of system is particularly suited to large gardens, fields or commercial sites where roof space is limited.

Vertical-Mounted Systems

Vertical-mounted panels are installed on walls or façades rather than roofs, making use of otherwise unused surfaces. They’re especially effective during the winter months when the sun is lower in the sky.

Vertical panels can also complement an existing rooftop solar system, allowing homeowners to take full advantage of the sun’s free energy by adding panels to walls for extra generation. They can also be paired with battery storage or EV chargers to maximise efficiency.
