Beware of Solar Scams: Protect Your Investment and Peace of Mind

At Sunlit Solar, we pride ourselves on providing reliable, high-quality solar installations and honest advice. However, we’ve seen an increase in reports of scams targeting solar owners. Scammers are becoming more creative in their attempts to exploit well-meaning homeowners and businesses. In this blog, we’ll shed light on some of the common solar scams, how to recognise them, and how to protect your investment.

The ‘Health Check’ Scam

One of the most prevalent scams involves unsolicited calls offering solar system “health checks.” Here’s how it typically unfolds:

  1. False Claims About Your Installer: Scammers claim that the company that installed your system has gone out of business, creating a sense of urgency and distrust.
  2. Alarming Statements About Your System: They may say that your inverter isn’t working or that they’ve detected an issue with your system.
  3. The Offer to ‘Fix’ It: These scammers then offer to come to your property to inspect or repair your solar system—often at a high cost or by coercing you into unnecessary upgrades.

The Reality:
In most cases, your system is working perfectly. Modern solar systems include monitoring apps that provide real-time data about performance. If there’s a genuine issue, you’d see it flagged in the app.

Unless it’s included as part of your insurance policy, routine health checks are usually unnecessary. A legitimate solar installer will only recommend an inspection if there’s an actual problem, and they will charge for the service transparently.

Other Solar Scams to Watch Out For

1. Fake Energy Rebate Offers

Some scammers promise access to government rebates or incentives but ask for a fee to process the application. Legitimate rebate programs do not require upfront payments. Always check directly with your local government or energy authority.

2. Unrealistic Pricing or ‘Too Good to Be True’ Deals

Beware of companies offering solar systems at dramatically lower prices than competitors. These systems often use substandard materials, lack proper warranties or never get installed at all. Always research the company’s credentials and reviews before signing a contract.

3. Pressure Tactics for Upgrades

Some fraudsters pose as representatives of your energy provider and claim you need to upgrade your system to meet new regulations. They may use high-pressure sales tactics to push you into costly and unnecessary upgrades.

4. Fake Maintenance Contracts

Scammers might offer long-term maintenance contracts for systems they didn’t install, promising regular check-ups and warranties that don’t exist. Always work with your original installer or a trusted, certified solar professional for maintenance.

5. ‘Free Solar Panels’ Trap

Be wary of companies advertising “free solar panels” in exchange for signing over control of your energy bill or entering a complex leasing agreement. These schemes often come with hidden costs and little long-term benefit.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Verify the Caller’s Credentials: If you receive an unsolicited call about your solar system, ask for their name and company and do some research for yourself. They should be registered with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Cross-check this information with official records or your original installer. Also, look at the company’s reviews online.
  2. Check Your System Yourself: Use your monitoring app to confirm your system’s performance. If there’s no indication of an issue, chances are your system is working fine.
  3. Contact Your Installer: For any concerns, reach out to your original installer or a trusted solar provider. They can verify the status of your system and offer honest advice.
  4. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: Avoid agreeing to inspections, upgrades or services from unknown companies, especially if they contact you out of the blue.
  5. Review Your Insurance Policy: Some insurance policies for community venues may include routine health checks, but this is uncommon for domestic systems. Always confirm what’s covered under your policy.
