Case Study: Durstons

Performance & Savings:

A measure of how efficiently a solar system converts sunlight into usable electricity. It’s the ratio of actual energy output to the system’s theoretical maximum output, as a percentage.

Grid Independence:

50%

The time it takes for a solar panel system’s energy savings to equal the initial installation cost. It’s calculated by dividing the total cost by annual savings from reduced energy bills.

Estimated Payback Period:

< 4 Years

The predicted amount of money a household or business saves on energy bills each month after installing a solar power system, based on energy production.

Estimated Monthly Bill Saving:

£5,482

The predicted amount of money a household or business saves on energy bills annually after installing a solar power system, based on energy production.

Estimated Annual Bill Saving:

£65,785

The total amount of money saved on energy bills over the entire lifespan of a solar system, accounting for installation costs and energy production.

Estimated Net Lifetime Bill Saving:

£1,252,135

System Overview:

The total capacity of a solar power system, measured in kilowatts (kW), which indicates how much electricity the system can produce under ideal conditions.

System Size:

220.8kW

How many photovoltaic modules (solar panels) were installed on this case study. PV modules are responsible for generating renewable energy from sunlight.

PV Modules:

480

Essential components in solar power systems that convert the direct current (DC) electricity produced by solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, for homes and businesses.

Inverters:

9 x 20kW

Devices that maximise the energy output of each solar panel by adjusting voltage and current, ensuring optimal performance even when some panels are shaded or underperforming.

Optimizers:

240

Predicted Impact:

The total amount of electricity a solar power system generates in a year, typically measured in megawatt-hours (MWh), based on the system’s size and sunlight exposure.

Annual Energy Production:

220.32MWh

The total direct current (DC) capacity of a solar power system, measured in kilowatts (kW), based on the combined output of all the solar panels under ideal conditions.

Installed DC Power:

220.8kWp

The highest amount of alternating current (AC) electricity a solar power system has produced at any given time, typically measured in kilowatts (kW), after conversion from DC.

Max Achieved AC Power:

180kW

The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) a solar power system prevents from being released into the atmosphere each year by replacing electricity generated from fossil fuels, measured in tons.

Annual CO2 Emissions Saved:

42.61t

The number of trees needed to absorb the same amount of CO2 emissions that a solar power system prevents each year, illustrating the environmental benefit in tree terms.

Equivalent Trees Planted (annually):

1,957

Durstons

Client Overview:

Durstons is a family-owned Somerset business with a history spanning more than 150 years. Specialising in high-performance compost and growing media, the company has built a strong reputation for quality, experience and innovation within its sector.

With a substantial amount of available roof space across the site, Durstons wanted to explore how solar could help reduce ongoing energy costs while supporting the company’s wider sustainability goals.

Project Scope:

Sunlit Solar was appointed to design and install a large-scale 220.8kW solar PV system, tailored to the energy needs of the business and the layout of the property.

The aim was to make effective use of the available roof space, increase on-site renewable energy generation and help the company reduce its reliance on grid electricity.

Solution Implemented:

Our team designed and installed a bespoke commercial solar PV array for Durstons, carefully planned around the site and its available roof areas.

The system includes 480 PV modules, supported by nine 20kW inverters and 240 optimisers. This design helps the business capture as much usable solar energy as possible, while supporting strong long-term performance across the installation.

Results Achieved:

Clean Energy Generation:

The completed solar PV system is predicted to generate approximately 220.32MWh of clean energy each year.

By producing more of its own electricity on site, Durstons is expected to reduce its dependence on traditional grid energy, helping to lower running costs and improve long-term operational efficiency.

Carbon Emissions Reduction:

The system is also predicted to save around 42.61 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, which is equivalent to planting approximately 1,957 trees each year.

Operational Efficiency:

With an estimated monthly bill saving of £5,482, an estimated net lifetime bill saving of £1,252,135 and a predicted payback period of less than four years, the installation shows the long-term value a well-designed commercial solar system can offer.

If your business has suitable roof space, solar could help reduce energy costs, improve sustainability and provide long-term protection against rising electricity prices.
