In the last few years, the number of people being contacted about “free solar panels” has risen sharply, through phone calls, letters, social media ads and even doorstep visits. For many Somerset homeowners, it can sound tempting: free panels, lower bills and no hassle. But the truth is, these offers are rarely as straightforward as they seem.
“Free” solar isn’t usually free
Many of the offers promoted as “free solar panels” are actually lease or Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) schemes. In these arrangements, another company owns the panels on your roof and sells you the electricity they generate. You don’t actually own the system, can’t benefit from export payments like the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), and might face complications when you come to sell your property.
Other companies are sending out letters and texts suggesting you can upgrade your existing panels or claim new grants such as a “Green Homes Scheme” or “£4,000 Solar Upgrade Fund”. These are not official government programmes. The original Green Homes Grant ended in 2021, and there is currently no replacement offering that type of funding.
If you’ve received something like this, proceed with caution. Reputable solar installers will never pressure you to act quickly or ask for personal details over the phone.
The ECO4 scheme: real, but not for everyone
You may have also heard of the ECO4 scheme. This is a genuine government initiative designed to help low-income or vulnerable households improve the energy efficiency of their homes. It covers certain upgrades, including insulation, heating improvements and in some cases, solar panels.
However, not everyone qualifies, and this is where confusion (and problems) begin. Some companies are stretching the eligibility rules or presenting ECO4 as a “free for everyone” grant. Even when the work is done legitimately, the installations are often outsourced to third-party contractors, which can lead to:
- Inconsistent installation quality
- Short workmanship warranties
- Difficulty finding the right contact if something goes wrong
- Cheaper, lower-quality panels or inverters
While the companies providing the installations under ECO4 aren’t necessarily doing anything illegal, the end result for homeowners can vary hugely depending on who actually carries out the work.
At Sunlit Solar, we often hear from people who’ve had these systems installed and are now struggling to get help, replacements or support.
How to protect yourself
If you’re approached with a “grant” or “upgrade” offer, take a few minutes to check:
✅ Is the company MCS-certified? (You can check at mcscertified.com)
✅ Are they registered on Companies House and easy to contact?
✅ Can they explain exactly who owns the panels once installed?
✅ Is there a clear, written warranty and aftercare process?
If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Our advice
There are great solar options out there, and many homeowners across Somerset are saving hundreds of pounds every year with systems that truly belong to them. The key is to work with a trusted, local installer who uses quality equipment, provides long-term support and takes time to explain how it all works.
At Sunlit Solar, we believe in empowering our customers with clear information, not pressure sales. Every system we install is bespoke, built to last and backed by real aftercare.
